Vinyl Institute is Hiring for a Press Secretary
Reporting to the VP of Marketing and Communications, the press secretary will help develop and deliver a media relations strategy to position the PVC industry in a positive light, promote Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC) and their activities, respond quickly to misinformation, and support our legislative agenda.
The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:
- Experience as a press secretary and spokesperson for elected officials, companies, government agencies, political campaigns, or associations.
- Understands the reporting process (researching story opportunities, interviewing skills, making connections with individuals and organizations to build a story)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Pre-established relationships with reporters
- Demonstrated experience writing and placing by-lined articles, letters to the editor, and op-eds with key publications
- Working knowledge of social media and rapid response to false narratives
- Ability to access implications of news stories on issues an organization supports or opposes
A press secretary would perform various media duties, including:
- Proactively promoting our positive stories such as sustainability, recycling grants, and lower carbon footprint.
- making targeted pitch calls
- responding to media inquiries
- building relationships with selected reporters
- coordinating with Vinyl Verified to ensure appropriate and quick responses
- researching editorial schedules
- writing and distributing/placing press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, by-line articles, and social media posts
- monitoring social media and the press daily

- Increase the positive visibility of the vinyl industry and the benefits of PVC applications
- Position VI as a resource, thought leader, and partner on issues/topics important to our industry

- Build strong relationships with key reporters from publications outside the trade press
- Educate journalists with data and information, answers, and analysis
- Reduce response time to addressing misinformation in media coverage
