Vinyl Siding Institute Gives an Update on Its Post-Consumer Recycling Program

By | November 2023

The team at the Vinyl Siding Institute has received grants from our VIABILITY recycling grant program in both the first and second rounds of funding. Their team has been hard at work to build out their recycling program – known as the Revinylize™ Recycling Collaborative – to create an efficient and streamlined way to increase post-consumer recycling of rigid vinyl materials like vinyl siding on homes and buildings. The program has been extremely successful in its early stages, and with the help of the VIABILITY grant – the VSI team is looking to expand the program to make it even more impactful.

Read on to see our Q&A with the VSI team to learn more about their post-consumer recycling program’s early successes and future goals!

What’s the main aim of this program?

The Revinylize™ Recycling Collaborative is a recycling initiative of dedicated installers, recyclers, distributors and manufacturers in partnership with the Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) and whose recyclers are verified by GreenCircle Certified. The program’s vision: to make recycling post-consumer rigid vinyl material as easy as possible. Together, we can build connections between stakeholders at each step of the waste disposal process, helping to divert and reclaim as much vinyl material as possible away from landfills.

How has the program expanded since its beginning?

Utilizing metrics, lessons learned and best practices developed from VSI’s Vinyl Siding Recycling Coalition (the pilot program in Northeast Ohio recycled 84,000+ pounds of aftermarket residential vinyl siding in 2022), the Revinylize Recycling Collaborative is an evolved, next-generation version that can be adapted as a nationwide solution for other metropolitan areas and regions around the country to divert millions of pounds of rigid vinyl from landfills and back into factories to make new products, including siding.

Do you have any main goals for the program that you can share?

The goal, which aligns with the Vinyl Institute’s (VI) Vinyl Sustainability Council post-consumer recycling goals, is to recycle 5 million pounds of post-consumer rigid vinyl in 2025.

Have there been any early numbers that you can share in terms of amounts recycled and progress toward goals?

2021 – 41,000 lbs. recycled as part of the program efforts

2022 – 84,000 lbs. recycled as part of the program efforts

2023 – 500,000 lbs. + recycled as part of the program efforts

What areas does the program serve? How can people enroll?

The program serves North American markets where vinyl siding has had a significant presence on homes for 50 years or more. Visit the new website (the site won’t be live until Nov. 28, 2023 – so check back later if you’re interested in learning more or enrolling) to join the movement or get involved – www.revinylizenow.org

How has funding from the VIABILITY grant program helped grow the program?

The VI’s recycling grant, which helped fund the initial development of the Revinylize brand and database infrastructure, will make it possible for us to accelerate the program’s launch, which will include all rigid vinyl products, including PVC piping, decking, railings and windows, among other products made from vinyl. A second round of VIABILITY funding is lined up to help us with individual geographic launches in key markets.
