VI’s Cristian Barcan Achieves ISSP Sustainability Certification

Cristian Barcan, vice president of Sustainability and Industry Affairs at the Vinyl Institute, has received notice from the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) that he passed the certification exam and is now a certified ISSP Sustainability Associate. Individuals who have successfully completed the ISSP-SA have demonstrated extensive professional and educational experience, as well as in-depth knowledge, in a variety of sustainability competencies.

The ISSP was formed in 2007 to provide consistency in the practice and definition of sustainability. It provides standardization of the competencies employers and those seeking qualified sustainability consultants have come to expect.

“Facing an unprecedented challenge of serving the global needs of 10 billion people in 2050, the vinyl industry has an opportunity to play an important role through its sustainability initiatives,” said Dick Doyle, president and CEO of the Vinyl Institute. “Achieving ISSP certification is a testament to Cristian’s and the VI’s focus and commitment to helping our industry members continue to make even greater strides in their sustainability programs.”

Barcan joined the VI last October, and he brought with him more than two decades of experience developing sustainability-related business models with proven success. His work for BASF, UL’s Information and Insights division, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association resulted in implementing effective continuous improvement programs. At the VI, he focuses on helping the vinyl industry continue to produce beneficial products for society in a manner that protects the environment and contributes to the health, safety and welfare of industry workers and the communities in which they operate.

Barcan introduced the Vinyl Institute as a member of The Sustainability Consortium (TSC). He is a frequent speaker and panel participant at global events, including Sustainable Brands.
