Vinyl Sustainability Council Announces Sustainability Internship Program
June 25, 2020
WASHINGTON – The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC) announced today the creation of two sustainability internships to support the VSC’s goals and strategic plan.
“Every day, we see society committing itself more and more to sustainability principals for a better tomorrow and future,” said Ned Monroe, President/CEO of the Vinyl Institute. “We’re glad to be able to offer this opportunity to students who will be living in that more sustainable future we are working hard to create, while giving them experience in shaping it themselves.”
The VSC is a collaboration platform bringing members from across the vinyl value chain together, from resin producer to end-product manufacturer, to advance the industry’s sustainable progress. Members are focused on priority areas centered around resource efficiency and recycling, emissions, and health and safety that align with three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
To showcase the industry’s further commitment to achieving these goals, the VSC launched +Vantage Vinyl™ in 2018, a sustainability initiative that allows the industry to better generate performance improvements and report on its progress.
While there is still more that can be accomplished, since beginning to track its sustainability journey nearly 40 years ago, the vinyl industry has achieved several accomplishments, which include:
- The decline of unit vinyl chloride monomer emissions by 84% since 1987 while vinyl resin production has increased by 99%.
- More than 1 billion pounds of vinyl materials recycled annually.
- Post-consumer recycled vinyl up 40% since 2014.
The sustainability interns will support membership development activities and will research and report on publicly available sustainability programs of PVC product manufacturers. The internships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students and will be conducted remotely. To find out more information and to read the formal internship description, click here.
