WASHINGTON, DC – The Vinyl Institute (VI), the U.S. trade association representing manufacturers of vinyl, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), additives, and modifiers, announced today it was opening grant applications to cover registration fees for up to four students to attend the Society of Plastics Engineers’ (SPE) Vinyltec.

“The Vinyl Institute is always seeking new ways to engage with students and build the workforce of tomorrow,” said Ned Monroe, VI President/CEO. “It has proven to be a highly beneficial experience for previous grantees looking to learn more about our industry.”

SPE is the leading technical society for the global plastics industry. It is a community of individuals involved in the technical and commercial aspects of the plastics and polymer industry. Vinyltec is the largest vinyl-focused technical conference in the United States. There, new developments in the vinyl industry are unveiled and participants receive training on niche areas of the industry.

“In academia, you study something and publish a paper and that’s the end of the story,” said Feiyang Chen, a 2019 grantee. “We don’t care as much about how people think, we’re primarily concerned with if our research is true. It was interesting to force myself to not only consider the researchers’ perspectives, but all the business’ and the market’s.”

This years event will be hosted both virtually and in-person in Indianapolis. The grant will cover the cost of a student registration. Any costs associated with travel will be funded by the recipient.

To apply for the 2021 Vinyltec Grant, a prospective grantee must:

  1. Be enrolled at an accredited U.S. university.
  2. Have not received a previous VI Vinyltec grant.
  3. Be pursuing a degree in polymer science, material science, chemistry, or chemical engineering.
  4. Be able to attend Vinyltec, either virtually or in-person from Oct. 19-21, 2021.

Applications must be received by Oct. 1, 2021. To apply for a grant, click here.
